Advanced Rf Power Sources for Linacs*

چکیده

In order to maintain a reasonable over-all length at high center-of-mass energy, the main linac of an electronpositron linear collider must operate at a high accelerating gradient. For copper (non-superconducting) accelerator structures, this implies a high peak power per unit length and a high peak power per RF source, assuming a limited number of discrete sources are used. To provide this power, a number of devices are currently under active development or conceptual consideration: conventional klystrons with multi-cavity output structures, gyroklystrons, magnicons, sheet-beam klystrons, multiple-beam klystrons and amplifiers based on the FEL principle. To enhance the peak power produced by an rf source, the SLED rf pulse compression scheme is currently in use on existing linacs, and new compression methods that produce a flatter output pulse are being considered for future linear colliders. This paper covers the present status and future outlook for the more important rf power sources and pulse compression systems. It should be noted that high gradient electron linacs have applications in addition to high-energy linear colliders; they can, for example, serve as compact injectors for FEL’s and storage rings. Introduction to Rf Linear Accelerators

After a short introduction to applications of RF linacs and their advantages and drawbacks as opposed to circular accelerators, the model of RF resonant cavities and their excitation by RF sources or beam is introduced. Then beam dynamics notions, essential to linacs, such as transit-time factor, synchronism, r.m.s. properties, matching and mismatching in linear or nonlinear forces, are presented.

Beam Loading Compensation for the Low Frequency Linacs and Compressors in the Nlc

The low frequency rf linacs and bunch compressors in the NLC are heavily loaded by beam currents up to 0.9 A. Beam loading generates bunch-to-bunch energy deviations, which need to be compensated to operate with long bunch trains in the linear collider. There are two basic compensation techniques, namely T and F schemes. The F scheme is operationally straightforward but requires additional rf s...

Radio frequency noise from clinical linear accelerators.

There is a great deal of interest in image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), and to advance the state of IGRT, an integrated linear accelerator-magnetic resonance (linac-MR) system has been proposed. Knowledge of the radiofrequency (RF) emissions near a linac is important for the design of appropriate RF shielding to facilitate the successful integration of these two devices. The frequency spectra of...

Towards high-performance optical master oscillators for energy recovery linacs

Advanced accelerators as well as 4th generation light sources require extremely precise timing distribution. Energy recovery linacs, for example, require precise timing of the electron bunches reentering the linac in order to minimize the disturbance of the RF amplitude and phase to evade resonant effects on the subsequent accelerated bunch. The timing distribution system has to maintain femtos...
